Gingko Bioworks Launches Flagship Partnership

Think of Jurassic Park - but without the dinosaurs. Ginkgo Bioworks is the leading horizontal platform for cell programming. On 4/22 Gingko announced plans to significantly expand its platform capabilities in agricultural biologicals, from discovery to field. Ginkgo's business is to program cells, similarly to programming computers to enhance organisms.

Gingko's programming could disrupt the following markets:

  • Consumer & Technology

  • Industrials and environment

  • Agriculture

  • Food & Nutrition

  • Pharma and Biotech

The major way Ginkgo is growing is through M&A:

Under the proposed transaction, Ginkgo is to acquire Bayer's West Sacramento agricultural biologicals site and team, adding a 175,000-square-foot R&D facility with pilot-scale fermentation, formulation, and greenhouse facilities, along with access to Bayer's large agricultural strain collection.

Agriculture is the backbone of our lives and the economy, and its importance continues to grow. Nitrogen fertilizer alone accounts for a large portion of cost and emissions in Ag. Currently, the Nitrogen-based fertilizer market accounts for $80B+.

The acquisition of Bayers could offer enormous upside for Ginkgo in the agriculture market. Bayers offers their biological site, team, and access to Bayer's large agricultural strain collection. This is a win for humanity if Ginkgo is able to execute on common agriculture disasters that create famines like disease and pest control.
